Javon Garcia

Youth Educator

As the Community Educator at Day One, Javon provides workshops to youth on Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and other topics surrounding and involving IPV such as Gender Roles and Consent & Coercion.

Javon graduated from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies. After graduating, he was an HIV Outreach Worker for The Night Ministry, a nonprofit agency in Chicago. There he provided free HIV, STI, and Hepatitis C testing and facilitated workshops on intimate partner violence, deescalating street harassment, healthy relationships, and consent for youth and adults experiencing homelessness.

Javon moved to NYC in the Fall of 2015 to start a job in the STAR Program at SUNY Downstate Medical Center where he provided treatment adherence support and medical case management for patients living with HIV/AIDS who have been lost to care.

Javon was born in Washington DC and raised in Maryland. He is passionate about this work because education to young people is the key to stopping the cycle of intimate partner violence, gender based violence, sexual assault and date rape.
