As summer ends, many people are going back to school in person for the first time in nearly two years. This is despite the impacts of the delta variant of COVID-19; there are more than twice as many cases reported now than last year, but states have been reluctant to completely shut down again. Although vaccines are now being offered to kids as young as 12, which could potentially allow for schools to open up more for certain age groups, it is looking more likely that more schools will have to be online or have virtual/online classes offered– forms that are less than ideal for the students attending them.
At Day One, we provide services for survivors of domestic and dating violence, but we also provide preventive education for people who have not experienced abuse. Part of this education included identifying what is healthy in a relationship – because knowing what is healthy helps you figure out what is unhealthy. With this post, we want to highlight “green flags,” or signs that you are in a healthy relationship.
On the morning of June 28th, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a prominent gay bar in Greenwich Village, prompting a violent uprising from the LGBTQ+ community. On the one year anniversary of the Stonewall riots, gay activists organized the Christopher Street Liberation march during New York’s first Gay Pride Week.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), which since the 2000s has been organized by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. In 2001, the first SAAM was born as a result of tireless efforts to bring awareness and justice to sexual violence by organizations all around the country.
On March 16th, eight people were killed in shootings at 3 Atlanta metro area spas. Six of those killed were Asian women. This is just the most recent in an increasing string of violent anti-Asian attacks. In the past year, and especially the past few months, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have experienced terrifyingly high rates of racist violence, many purportedly influenced by xenophobia tied to COVID-19.
For LGBTQ+ young people, having a supportive adult around can be the biggest contributor to future well-being. A strong allyship often starts with small changes to your everyday behavior.
This February is Black History Month. At Day One, we want to acknowledge some of the Black voices that have truly changed history over the past few years with their activism, resilience, and prerogative for change through the lens of social media. These contemporaries continue to inspire us with their hard work and efforts to cultivate an anti-racist world.
