History

Founded in September 2003 as the local office of Break the Cycle, Day One has become the primary voice of expertise in New York City on the issue of dating abuse and domestic violence among youth. Day One was founded to ensure the continuation of essential services for New York City’s youth, and in October 2005, Day One became an incubator project of the Fund for the City of New York (“the Fund”).

Since 2003, Day One staff has educated more than 10,00 inner-city youth, professionals and caregivers, and provided legal guidance and representation to more than 250 individuals. On college campuses, Day One has raised awareness of domestic violence among thousands more young people. Our Coalition Against Teen Relationship Abuse (“CATRA”) draws members from more than thirty different agencies to collectively advocate on teen relationship abuse issues. Day One is also involved in a range of community partnerships advocating to establish dating abuse policy in schools and to expand family court access for individuals in dating relationships.
