Here's what's going on at Day One.

Day One is thrilled so many of our supporters could join us on October 3rd at Teens & Tech: Day One's Benefit to End Dating Violence Among Youth to honor Anne Glauber & Finn Partners and Tradeweb Markets LLC. John D. Olson, Managing Director-Investments at Merrill Lynch was also recognized for his service as Vice Chair & Treasurer of Day One's Board of Directors.
We presented two Youth Leadership Awards during the evening, and guests heard both young people share powerful stories of survival. Jenny spoke of the life-changing services she received from Day One's attorney and social worker. Emily read a powerful poem she wrote about her abuse and shared her experience having a judge mistakenly tell her she was ineligible to receive a Family Court protective order. Their stories moved our guests and introduced an impactful message about Day One's work.
If you weren't able to attend, please consider making a donation in support of young survivors.

This summer, the Associate Board is holding a trivia night to support community education workshops for public schools in the Bronx.
Your donation of $25 grants you entry to the event, access to the happy hour specials: $3 domestic beer and $5 mixed drink specials and 1/2 price appetizers and a guaranteed seat to our 90's themed trivia, with prizes for teams in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Every $100 raised educates a class of Bronx students about the warning signs of abuse, teens' rights under the law, healthy relationship skills and much more. This is especially critical for this borough where the rate of reported domestic violence is highest in all of New York City.
So if you can tell the difference between Rocko, Rugrats and Rafiki and want to support safe, loving futures for the youth of New York City, come to Lovin' Summer and buy your $ 25 advance tickets now! Tickets are $30 at the door.
We hope to see you there!

In December, the Youth Voices Network held their 4th Annual Writing Contest for youth. Teens from all over New York City sent in their poems, essays and short stories of what their idea of love is. After a difficult judging process, the winners have been chosen and Day One held the reading and award ceremony for these budding young writers this past January 27th. In honor of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, we will be posting these beautiful, hopeful and best of all, healthy depictions of love on our blog every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in February.
Poetry: 6th through 9th grade: 1st Place: Jayne Mitchel
"Eternal Love"
I wonder if I dreamed of you-
If you would appear?
To make my nights full of love,
And always hold me near.
I wonder if I thought of you-
if you would feel it in your soul?
Like two spirits in the universe,
who always seem to know.

What is love?
Love is like a too small glove.
Once you have it on its hard to get it off,
It makes you feel all gushy and soft.
Love is suppose to feel like butterflies,
Having someone next to you that never lies.
Someone you can trust with everything you say,
Not someone who forces you to stay.
Someone who buys you gifts because you deserve it,
Someone who says I Love you because you're worth it.
Someone who can warm you without their touch,
Someone who smiles and make you blush.
Caring, Committing, and passion is the key,
These three things are what you should be.
Abuse, doesn't solve anything,
Using Force doesn't make you king.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month and it's just around the corner!
In honor of this important event, Day One will be launching our very first Facebook video campaign: FACT or FICTION: Myths about Dating Abuse. Every Monday in February, we'll post a common myth about dating abuse on our page and ask if you think:
a. it's FACT or FICTION; and
b. WHY.
Then on Wednesday, we'll post a video that breaks the myth down, featuring our very own wonderful community educator, Claudia Martinez.
But you need to be our fan on Facebook to access this great new content. Like us on Facebook at facebook.com/DayOneNY today!

We want to thank everyone who came to the Youth Voices Network's 4th Annual Writing Contest Award Ceremony at Barnes and Noble, TriBeCa this past Friday! From family, friends, Day One supporters and everyday New Yorkers who stopped by and listened to the young winners share their ideas about what love is, we appreciate the outpouring of support that packed the bookstore's event space. It truly meant a lot to our young people, the Youth Voices Network and of course, Day One. We'll be posting more photos and video in the coming weeks so be sure to check back for those!

We are so proud of our young winners. We wish them best of luck and hope that they find the safe and happy kind of love they wrote about so beautifully in their works. We encourage them to keep writing and be advocates for safe and healthy love among their family, friends and communities. Let your light--and your love--shine for the world!
We will be posting the winning submissions on our blog every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Stay tuned to read these fantastic and inspiring works from New York City's next-generation of poets, essayists and authors!

Yesterday was Liz Claiborne Inc.'s eighth annual It's Time To Talk Day, a national day of dialogue and awareness on domestic violence, sexual assault and teen dating abuse coordinated through their Love Is Not Abuse campaign. The organizers invited talk radio hosts, government officials, domestic violence advocates, businesses, and schools to talk to one another and get the conversation started on in issue that severely impacts our society.
Day One's Executive Director Stephanie Nilva was one of the experts invited to speak on the issue. Asked about the importance of this event, Stephanie said "Liz Claiborne's It's Time to Talk Day focuses awareness on domestic violence issues affecting people of all ages, and awareness can save lives."
