Prose: 10th through 12th grade: 1st Place: Bella Dapilma

I'd have to like his ears.

Whether they be large framed or small cut, arched up or spread out like wings our love would take flight on, his ears would have to satisfy me in ways the rest of his body never could.  His ears would have close cornered relationship with my lips and my tongue. My voice box would quake at the thought of his presence, because there is security in a man who listens.

Be it that he's deaf, I'd have to like his eyes

Whether they be onyx or an autumn sky at midnight. Perhaps even cartoon colored river beneath the bridge that we'd cross silently.  Just watching and looking and reading and tearing and opening and tearing and twinkling and piercing and taking in as much of each other as possible. Something unrestrained and fleshy raw. His eyes would share themselves with me equally. Every precious memory and every dream he's ever dreamed, moreover if his dreams should be about me.

In the case that he is both deaf and blind, I'd have to like his  lips and all it's encompassing.

"What is Love?"

In my perfect relationship love will feel the way it feels now. Unconditional. My mom and I have the greatest respect and honesty towards each other and this comes with the love that we have for one another. My relationship with my mom is very open and there's nothing better in this world than to have a loving relationship with your parent. Parents are there to support you in all the many ways you may need support, whether it  be work, school, friends, or boy problems--no matter what it is they are always there for you. Not only is my mom there to help me out with all of these things,  but she is there to help me find a solution to my dilemmas so that my life can become much easier. My mommy's love is unconditional and I bet yours is too. This is why I say my perfect relationship is with my mom. I know that no one can ever give me the love that she gives me. Her love for me is one of a kind.

Executive Director talks about the role of parents in teen relationships in light of apparent Chris Brown, Rihanna reunion

02/23/2012

Executive Director Stephanie Nilva spoke with Kunbi Tinuoye about what parents can and should say when talking about romantic relationships, unhealthy ones in particular, with their teens.

According to Stephanie: the celebrity couple's high profile domestic relationship "is an opportunity for parents to open a dialogue about abusive relationships before or as their children are dating and make sure teenagers understand the importance of safe and respectful partnerships. The best thing a parent can do is to ensure that if their child goes through something like this they have open lines of communication to talk to their parents."

Day One Executive Director on Rihanna and Chris Brown reunion: "Enough already"

02/23/2012

Enough already.

"...if the best we can do when a young woman is abused is question what she did to cause it, then that qualifies as a serious failure."

For days, the phone calls, tweets and posts have been flying around my office. And the calls are coming in: Can you comment on the Rihanna/Chris Brown reunion? What does it mean if they get back together? What is she thinking?

Let me be clear: I am not friends with Rihanna or Chris Brown, I work in the field of domestic violence, specifically in the field of dating violence and how it affects youth. I do not know what is motivating either pop star to work together, be seen together or possibly renew their relationship. I do not know what it's like to be a celebrity who is constantly in the public eye, and have your every move questioned, analyzed or imitated.

What I do know something about is abuse that happens in the context of a relationship.

Prose: 10th through 12th grade: 3rd Place: Rachel Smalle

"Out of the Vortex"

He stood before her, teeth bared. A vampire, a soul sucker, a life sucker. He struck her, she tasted blood in her mouth and remembered a time when she had been a warrior that never would have let the vampire get that close. Close enough to hit her. Now she could hardly stand her ground.

"Bitch." He growled out. She attempted to strike him back, raising her arm as quickly as she could, but he only blocked her blow and laughed. She wanted to cry, to curl up in a ball and let the world go on without her. This was the Vampire she couldn't fight, the one that would drain her dry. He had already been doing it for years, bit by bit, with every blow he heaved upon her. Even now he was contorting his face into something ugly as he attempted to apologize to her, attempted to tell her how much he loved her.

He was lying through his long canines.

Vampires can't love, you see. They don't have souls. They will suck you dry, lie to you, drain you of everything you were or could have been, but they cannot love. They don't know what love is. To them it means jealousy, rage, violence, the only things a soulless creature understands. She has been telling herself this for a while now, and ignoring her own words for just as long. Vampires are very good at their lies. Every time he softly touched her cheek, begged for her forgiveness, threatened to put a stake through his heart, she listened. She believed. He was pleading now, reaching his arms out to her. "You cannot beat me" those red eyes seemed to say as she felt her will crumble. Yet she didn't miss the movement of his lips moving to kiss her, to suck the blood from her mouth. Soul sucker. Life sucker.

"What's Love?"

What's Love?

Love is a 4-letter word that many don't understand

        But try to analyze,

Love is a sensation or high

But it pulls you down like gravity,

Love is a hidden shadow

But you can still feel its presence,

Love is an unexpected blow

But an even less expected recovery,

Love is the fire that lights the match of hope

        But deceit hoses it down,

Love is an unforgettable feeling

But a feeling many wish to forget,

"You Got Me"

When it comes to loving you, know I'm best,

I can kiss and caress.

Causing your heart to beat within your breast;

Don't I know how to get under your skin?

But baby you make me want to breath you in,

When we fight I let you win.

When you want I get you

And then some more

Simply 'cause you alone, I love and adore

So when you ask what I want

I only say you more and more.

Teen Dating Abuse News: Journalists, bloggers help raise awareness for National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month (TDVAM Edition)

02/17/2012

In the Headlines

Day One's Youth Voices Network member speaks to BBC about her experience of teen dating abuse. Gabrielle  was abused by her first boyfriend while in high school: "About two months into the relationship he became very controlling," she said. "Where was I going? Who was I talking to? Why was I talking to this person? "Eventually the verbal intimidation turned to physical abuse and Gabrielle was attacked on several occasions.

Legal Matters

Murder trial of UVA lacrosse player set to begin. Nearly two years after Boston teen Yeardley Love was found dead, bruised and lying in a pool of blood in an off-campus apartment near the University of Virginia, her former boyfriend and fellow lacrosse player is scheduled to stand trial for her murder, a trial that puts the focus on the issue of teen dating abuse.

Research

University of New Hampshire study finds survivors of dating abuse more likely to have experienced other kinds of violence. The University of New Hampshire Crimes Against Children Research Center produced a survey about dating violence on 1,680 youth aged 12 to 17. The researchers learned that for a distressingly high percentage, the dating victimization wasn't the first time they had been abused. Sixty percent of the teens surveyed had also experienced at least one type of sexual violence, with the most common being verbal harassment (30 percent), flashing by a peer (25 percent) or sexual assault (20 percent).

Opinion

Vice-President Joe Biden says that together, we must end dating violence. "These are important changes, but ending dating violence and sexual assault isn't just a matter of laws and legislation.  It's about education. It's about attitudes. It's about your participation.  I need your help to address this issue in your dorms and on your campuses.  Studies show that men's ideas about what other men think is one of the strongest determinants of how they act. So guys, you need to speak out."

Events

Events and campaigns for National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month are happening all over the country. A local California organization held an event for local governments to officially recognize the month and sign proclamations in support of prevention and victim services throughout the County. Student and adult leaders from a Massachusetts university held a breakfast launching the "White Ribbon Campaign," pledged to wear white ribbons throughout the week to help draw attention to the issue of teen dating violence. A Virginia high school held an education program to inform parents and teens about healthy relationships. A Massachusetts radio show celebrates its anniversary by bringing awareness to teen dating violence. Texas city mayor honors volunteer teen advocates who raise awareness about teen dating violence in the community. The governor of Maine declared February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. A California organization holds a vigil for a teen murdered by her abuser. Two California organizations honor winners of their dating abuse awareness poster contest. A Colorado organization hosts a Valentine's Day gala to promote healthy relationships. A Washington Jewish organization raises awareness about dating abuse in their community. Virginia high schools host a forumon teen dating violence called "What's Love Got to do With it: Healthy Relationships and Dating." A Maryland organization is hosting a forum called "It's Time to Talk: A Forum on Dating Violence." A group of California schools and organizations are raising awareness of dating abuse through the "Purple Power" campaign.Idaho teens hold seminars about healthy relationships and dating violence at their school and another high school held a campus-wide assembly to talk about the issue. A California organization features a local organization's efforts to help teens avoid violent relationships. Oklahoma high school students reach out to peers to educate them about dating violence. A California organization holds awareness events to educate the community about dating abuse. An Ohio high school's art exhibit educates teens on dating violence.

02/16/2012

Gabrielle, a member of Day One's Youth Voices Network was interviewed by the BBC's Newsbeat about her experience with dating abuse.

According to Gabrielle: "About two months into the relationship he became very controlling. Where was I going? Who was I talking to? Why was I talking to this person?" She admits she stayed in the relationship for as long as she did because she didn't realise her boyfriend's behaviour wasn't normal."I came from a home where there was abuse and I just thought this was the kind of problem that happened in relationships," she said.

"Broken Love is Perfect Love"

Don't know what do,

My mind is playing games on me and you

I can feel the energy pouring out of my soul

I'm slowly losing faith on everything I held close

These half-truths and lies are breaking the rules

slowly killing me for being so cruel

I can play with my emotions

Make me a happy self

But sometimes I fall

And become someone else

I still lick the wounds

Instead of making them heal

Because hurting for a long period of time is what I usually feel

I cry for the happiness of us both

Knowing that I really don't want to be alone

"Please beat me up Chris Brown... JK!" is not funny

02/14/2012

The Internet is abuzz with people's reactions to Chris Brown's presence at the Grammy's this year, which included a performance by him.  The issue everyone is discussing is how his past behavior should impact his participation in the awards ceremony.  We will be collecting as many of these posts as we can for this week's edition of Teen Dating Abuse in the News, but there is one I thought I'd share today.

"Yikes. Looks like we have a really big problem here, society."

Matt Stopera from Buzzfeed posted an article a couple of days ago that really gets to the heart of the problem we're dealing with—the lack of awareness, the victim blaming and making it seem like dating/domestic violence just isn't that serious.  Especially for celebrities, blanket absolution is given as soon as they entertain us once again with a new hit song or movie.  The article, "25 Extremely Upsetting Reactions To Chris Brown At The Grammys," is a collection of Tweets and Facebook status updates of various young women who, in reaction to Chris Brown's performance at the Grammy's, expressed in no uncertain terms how they would be thrilled to have Chris Brown beat them up. Some qualified their post, saying that the abuse was only acceptable if Chris Brown serenaded or kissed them, but others just flat out said that his abuse was welcome with no exception.

'What is Love?' Winners' Series: 6th-9th Grade Prose, 1st Place, Shinice Ford

Prose: 6th through 9th grade: 1st Place: Shinice Ford

People write about love all the time, but they almost can never define it. Can love be defined? Can a person say, "Well love of course is a strong affection and compassion, with a little of a friendship mixed in"? Would a simple formula like that satisfy you? We all know that love is hard to define.

Love is something that can be interpreted in many different ways- it depends on the person. When I think of love, I think of kindness, trust, honesty and gratitude. To me there is no such thing as a perfect relationship. But you can maintain a relationship close to it. This can consist of integrity, fidelity, commitment and respect. Being in love is like being at ease. It also feels magical. Love could be confused with lust and desire. Love isn't just anywhere either. It is easy to find love but hard to keep. All I could say is that when in love, good luck staying strong and surviving. Love can blind you. You will become weak and powerless.

Words from a Survivor: You Can't "Just Leave"

02/12/2012

In honor of National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, we're featuring the voices of survivors who have written on our blog before. Read Katie's story:

...the struggles and emotions of that time can come right back...

From the ages of 16 to 18, I was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship.  It was an experience that has

stayed with me ever since, and part of how I continue to cope with what I went through is by being actively involved in ending the cycle of violence.

I often speak at high schools and conferences regarding my experience, which is part of my work with the Youth Voices Network.  It can be difficult to retell my story so many times, as the struggles and emotions of that time can come right back. But the most difficult part of those forums and talks is not me telling my story. It is, instead, when the discussion turns to what someone should do if they know their friend is being abused.

"Sometimes You Know When Waiting is Worth While."

When you feel at home, but you're completely lost. You feel okay, though everything seems to be crashing except that one thing, that one small thing that is keeping you happy. Saving you from drowning in a sea of nostalgia. It keeps you on your toes and helps you forget how you used your future to escape the past. You finally are enjoying your present; does time seem to be flying quicker? You think to yourself. Summer sun kissed skin passed and the cool crisp air of autumn arrives once again. That favorite chill down your arm, the air that you long for in the passing of other seasons, you stop to draw pictures of the beautiful leaves and just to take it all in when this wind below freezing point comes and takes fall away. It was winter who came now. The trees are cold and bare and they remind you of what you used to be and you understand as you watch the delicate snowflakes sprinkle intricately in place just like they did for you and you realize that it's okay.

"Regrets and Mistakes Their Memories Made"

I was only three years old when my beloved mother passed away. Mom and I had pleasant times together, and they were unforgettable. I have a big brother now, and before he used to give my father a callous time. My dad didn't have time for us and our problems because he was so engaged in his work, but it wasn't his fault. Since my father did not have time I really didn't comprehend things about life and its consequences. That's how I ended up becoming who I am today.

In honor of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, we will be posting these beautiful, hopeful and best of all, healthy depictions of love on our blog every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in February.

"Eternal Love"

I wonder if I dreamed of you-

If you would appear?

To make my nights full of love,

And always hold me near.

I wonder if I thought of you-

if you would feel it in your soul?

Like two spirits in the universe,

who always seem to know.

Arts for LGBTQ Youth!

02/06/2012

Check out this awesome arts opportunity from the Brooklyn Community Pride Center!

Present Tense Art is an arts workshop series for LGBTQ-identified youth between the ages of 13-21. The series focuses on civic engagement by amplifying the voices of queer youth who live in New York City. It's our goal to create an environment where young people, drawing from their own personal life experiences, can identify issues that are most important to them and their community (i.e. homelessness, crime, bullying, etc – the sky is the limit!) To capture this, each participant will go through an eight week arts workshop series (film/performance, visual art, creative writing, photography) and create pieces of art themed around community issues and dreams. This art will be featured in a special Community Showcase at the LGBT Community Center in Manhattan in early April. Friends, family, staff, community members, leaders, and stakeholders will be invited to the Showcase. The workshop series will kick off with an orientation to be held on Wednesday, February 8th from 6-8pm at the LGBT Community Center in Manhattan (208 West 13th Street between 7th Ave & 8th Ave). Refreshments will be served at each session. For more information, please email PresentTenseArt@gmail.com. Present Tense Art is sponsored by the Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center (LGBT Center), Public Allies, and AmeriCorps (Corporation for National and Community Service).

Words from a Survivor: Ending the Cycle

02/05/2012

In honor of National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, we're featuring the voices of survivors who have written on our blog before. Read Ginger's story:

I learned to stay silent and keep it to myself...

Over 10 years ago, I was in an abusive relationship in high school. At that time there were limited resources and not much awareness around teen dating violence in my community. I, along with the adults in my life, did not know what to do or where to turn. I learned to stay silent and keep it to myself. It so happened that a year after one abusive relationship ended, the next partner I entered into a relationship with also became abusive. Still carrying the unprocessed and unresolved pain, confusion, and trauma from the first relationship, I had little to no understanding of what a healthy, non-violent relationship should look like.

Poetry: 6th through 9th grade: 2nd Place: Aminah S. Greene

What is love?

Love is like a too small glove.

Once you have it on its hard to get it off,

It makes you feel all gushy and soft.

Love is suppose to feel like butterflies,

Having someone next to you that never lies.

Someone you can trust with everything you say,

Not someone who forces you to stay.

Someone who buys you gifts because you deserve it,

Someone who says I Love you because you're worth it.

Someone who can warm you without their touch,

Someone who smiles and make you blush.

Caring, Committing, and passion is the key,

These three things are what you should be.

Abuse, doesn't solve anything,

Using Force doesn't make you king.

TDVAM edition: Obama declares February as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month

02/03/2012

In the Headlines

President Barack Obama declared February as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. "NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim February 2012 as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month.  I call upon all Americans to support efforts in their communities and schools, and in their own families, to empower young people to develop healthy relationships throughout their lives and to engage in activities that prevent and respond to teen dating violence."

Legal Matters

Violence Against Women Act reauthorization passes Senate Judiciary Committee. The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2011 (VAWA) successfully passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee almost intact despite intense opposition from Republicans. One amendment that passed includes mandatory minimum sentences of five years for aggravated sexual assaults.

Opinion

Civil rights reporter discusses need for the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act. "So many women in America, and around the world, face violence at some point in their lives, often at the hands of men who are entrusted to love and protect them. Former Senator Joe Biden addressed the need to change national attitudes, not simply national legislation. However, until attitudes do change, advocates say that reauthorizing VAWA is essential to insuring that women will have access to the services they need to protect them."

Events

Teens, schools and organizations all across the country are holding events and distributing materials to participate in National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. In support of the national initiative, players on the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School ice hockey team will be sporting stickers on their helmets with the message, "End Domestic Violence." The Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and several dozen students recently held a rally in Helena, MO to educate people and prevent violence. Teens from Cornwall, Canada produced a video about teen dating violence that will be distributed to all the schools under the Upper Canada District School Board. TheUniversity of Southern Maine is holding a brown-bag lunch seminar on teen dating violence awareness. Athletes from several school districts in Austin, Texas will wear purple shoelaces during games in February to raise awareness. Columbus, Indiana groups are holding an ice-skating event to raise awareness of dating violence in their community and collect donations for local students to produce awareness skits. The Northeast Indiana chapter of the Young Women's Christian Association distributed a toolkit to area schools to educate young people about dating violence. Author Trenette Wilson is releasing her bookA Designer's Daughter, a story about a young girl who makes unhealthy relationship choices and its ramifications, to coincide with the awareness month. STRIVE, a youth group in Pennsylvania, is holding a summit where young people can speak out about domestic violence from the teen perspective in honor of the awareness month. The University of Colorado-Denver, in partnership with local government and advocacy groups, is holding a rally for teen dating violence awareness. Laura's House, an Orange County, CA domestic violence shelter, held a vigil to spotlight teen dating violence and commemorate victims of abuse. A group called "Teens Against Abuse," composed of Morgantown high school students, visited Charleston, West Virginia to raise awareness among lawmakers of abuse and violence. The City of Oakland and A Safe Place, a local domestic violence shelter, are hosting a teen dating violence town hall session, including a panel discussion and survivor stories. The National Council of Jewish Women's Arizona Section focused their annual Domestic Violence Brunch on teen dating abuse and healthy dating relationships. A New Hampshire performance of playwright Eve Ensler's work will benefit A Safe Place, a dating and domestic abuse organization that offers shelter and supportive services to the local community.

Former Day One Legal Intern featured in National Jurist Magazine!

02/03/2012

Courtney Chenette, former Day One Legal Intern in National Jurist

Courtney Chenette was a legal intern for Day One for two years. This month, the National Jurists' Best Law Schools for Public Service edition featured her for her work with the Pace Women's Justice Center and her Justice for Women Award. She talked about her work at Day One and her experiences with the court system around dating abuse.

Speaking of how to make young people safe in their relationships, Courtney said: "Outreach and education is what is going to make communities safer for young people. It starts with a dialogue about self-respect. It doesn't just start when you are 18."

Courtney has been a wonderful presence in our office and an important part of the team! We are so proud of her and wish her the best!

If love is shown in every perfect relationship

What do you see?

If she or he is so important

Are they stuck to you like a stinging bee?

If you care for them so much

What do you feel?

If you see them, do you want them to be with you

As much as having your favorite automobile?
