Liz (not her real name) was 15 years old when she was sexually assaulted by an older mentor that she had known for years and had a crush on. After the assault, he continued to approach her, and call and text her at all hours, while remaining in his job as a mentor. Because of her age, Liz was initially turned away from the Family Court when she tried to petition for an order of protection (OP). Confused and upset, she came to Day One to explore her options. Because of the Fair Access Bill of 2008 which Day One helped pass, Liz had a legal avenue to get an OP against her assailant. She eventually also decided to file criminal charges, and he finally was removed from his mentorship position. After Day One began counseling services this winter, Liz joined Day One's support group and now says that she finds comfort and friendship in the community of other young survivors. Liz ended the school year with great grades, is doing lots of volunteer work in her community, and just found out that she has been hired for a competitive paid internship at a prominent New York non-profit. Day One is proud of her accomplishments and the support we were able to offer her along her path.
