History

Day One launched its work in 2003, and has become the primary voice of expertise in New York City on the issue of dating abuse and domestic violence among youth. Day One was founded to ensure essential prevention and direct services related to relationship abuse are available to New York City's youth.

Since 2003, Day One has educated more than 22,000 youth about how to identify and maintain healthy relationships, obtain legal protection when necessary and assist others experiencing abuse. More than 4,000 professionals have been trained to identify relationship abuse among youth and to pro-vide supportive, nonjudgmental guidance to teens. On college campuses, Day One helps students develop leadership and advocacy skills through youth-led projects to end abusive relationships. Day One has reached over 6,000 college students through aware events. More than 400 young people have been represented in court, guided through a safety planning process or counseled on their legal rights and responsibilities. Day One is also involved in a range of community partnerships and policy initiatives to increase young people's rights related to intimate partner violence.

In October 2005, Day One became an incubator project of the Fund for the City of New York.
