Day One partners with New York City youth to end dating abuse and domestic violence through community education, supportive services, legal advocacy and leadership development. Serving the five boroughs of New York City, Day One uses an empowerment model that invests and involves young people in maintaining safe relationships for themselves and their peers.
Striving to prevent domestic violence before it starts, Day One trains youth and adults about dating abuse and the law. We develop leadership and advocacy skills by organizing students to raise awareness about domestic violence among their peers. In response to the destructive impact of relationship abuse on youth, Day One provides young survivors with legal representation and advocacy in courts and agencies, and offers counseling to young victims of abuse. All services for youth are free and available in English and Spanish.
Since 2003, Day One has educated more than 20,000 youth about how to identify and maintain healthy relationships, obtain legal protection when necessary and assist others experiencing abuse. More than 4,500 professionals have been trained to identify relationship abuse among youth and to provide supportive, nonjudgmental guidance to teens. Hundreds of additional young people have been represented in court, guided through a safety planning process or counseled on their legal rights and responsibilities. On college campuses, Day One helps students develop leadership and advocacy skills through youth-led projects to end abusive relationships.
Day One is supported by a range of sources including private foundations, state and city government, individuals and corporate donors. We involve teenagers, undergraduates, law students, professionals and community members in volunteer projects that enable us to serve thousands of youth each year. In partnership with our community, we can build safer futures for youth.
