Community Education Program

Day One’s preventive education program uses role plays and interactive elements to raise questions about power and control in relationships among youth. Presentations in schools, youth programs and foster care facilities teach teens how to identify the warning signs of dating violence, help a friend who is being abused, and exercise their rights and responsibilities under the law. In addition to educating youth, Day One trains professionals—such as school faculty and administrators, parents and child protective caseworkers—to identify dating abuse among youth, make appropriate referrals and offer supportive guidance to youth. By training professionals, Day One helps ensure young people have access to critical information and resources, and supports a violence-free environment for youth.

Day One chairs an interdisciplinary Coalition Against Teen Relationship Abuse (CATRA) that meets regularly to coordinate services, host trainings and collectively advocate on issues pertaining to youth relationship abuse. CATRA meetings are attended by members from over 30 organizations, including community-based organizations, shelters, city agencies, and criminal and civil courts.
