Day One provides confidential assistance over the phone to youth, helps
parents support teens/young adults involved in abusive relationships,
and provides technical assistance to professionals handling a dating
abuse/domestic violence case. Youth can ask to speak to a lawyer
regarding their rights, legal options, school safety transfers and
detailed safety planning.

Call for information about domestic violence shelter availability in
the New York area, and domestic violence assistance of all kinds. Safe
Horizon operates this hotline, which is the City of New
York’s domestic violence hotline. Safe Horizon is the
nation’s largest nonprofit victim assistance, advocacy, and
violence prevention organization. The agency offers over 75 programs
throughout New York City’s five boroughs in community
offices, courts, police precincts, schools and medical facilities.

Youthline

New York City Youthline is a confidential, toll-free telephone
information and support service for young people, parents, service
providers and community members. Youthline employs 16 to 24 year old
"Listeners" who are trained and supervised by adult professionals to
provide anonymous information and support to callers. Listeners assist
callers in many types of situations: from youth-in-crisis, to family
conflicts and relationship problems, to helping locate after-school and
recreation programs in their neighborhoods.

Young people between the ages of 12 and 21 can access health care,
including birth control, HIV & STD counseling &
testing, legal assistance with immigration, foster care, public
assistance, emancipated minors, advice about orders of protection,
housing, employment & family court, GED preparation, SAT
preparation, individual and group therapy and recreational activities.

STEPS
to End Family Violence

STEPS to End Family Violence provides alternatives to incarceration for
abused women, therapy for children (ages 4 to 14) who have witnessed
abuse in their homes, teen abuse education and counseling, a teen male
batterers program (26-week mandatory program), domestic violence and
substance abuse counseling, foster care prevention for families when
mother is incarcerated, and an employment readiness program for
TANF-eligible mothers. STEPS is located in Manhattan.

The Family Wellness Program offers group and individual counseling for
teens who have been affected by family violence and/or who are being
abused in an intimate relationship. Also offered are educational
workshops and peer leadership groups for teens. Services for younger
children, adult women and adult men are also offered. Services are
offered in several Children’s Aid Society sites in Manhattan
and the Bronx.

Gay & Lesbian Anti-Violence Project

The New York City Gay & Lesbian Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is
a crime victim service agency for the lesbian, gay, transgendered,
bisexual, and HIV affected communities. AVP offers free and
confidential support to victims of bias crimes, domestic violence,
pick-up crimes, police misconduct, HIV-related violence, rape, and
sexual assault. Individual and group counseling is available at AVP,
while a bilingual (English/Spanish) crisis hotline offers assistance
from counselors and trained volunteers. AVP provides clients with
accompaniments and advocacy with the police, the courts, medical, and
social service agencies. AVP also has resources for batterers.

Barrier Free Living’s Domestic Violence Program serves
disabled clients who are experiencing or have previously experienced
domestic violence, and their children who have witnessed abuse. They
provide information and referral services, individual and group
counseling, psychotherapy, psychiatric services, occupational therapy,
and advocacy services.

LawHelp.org/NY is an online resource for low-income New Yorkers seeking pro bono
legal assistance. Find help on issues such as housing, family & juvenile,
identity theft, taxes, consumer, public benefits, health and more! Featuring
thousands of resources in over 39 languages, an instructional video and a mirror
