Legal Services
Day One’s legal program provides legal advice, information and direct representation to young people between the ages of twelve and twenty-two. We specialize in meeting the needs and unique challenges of teens leaving abusive relationships, such as designing a safety plan specific to a school setting or providing assistance with emancipation for young adults in need of public benefits or shelter. An attorney might help a teen obtain a school transfer to escape her abuser or connect a student with counseling or needed benefits. In a legal setting, Day One helps clients obtain criminal and family court orders of protection and related court orders for custody, visitation and child support. We help teens navigate administrative proceedings necessary to obtain benefits that help ensure their safety. Day One also conducts legislative advocacy to expand young people’s eligibility for and access to legal remedies.
